Life Jackets…An Essential Part of Water Safety
Life vests and jackets are an essential part of water safety, especially if you have children. They are even great for dogs! They can be cumbersome, but they save lives, and drowning is the 2nd leading cause of death for kids from 1-14.
Don’t take chances with the lives of the people you love. A life jacket is an important purchase, not one on which you should cut corners. The best life jackets are U.S. Coast Guard approved. The U.S. Coast Guard classifies them into five categories, but only 1-3 are approved for children.
According to “Parent Magazine,” improper fit is the most common mistake parents make when purchasing a life jacket for their children. If a life jacket doesn’t fit, it simply won’t provide adequate protection. To be safe, follow the U.S. Coast Guard fit test:
- Check the label to match your child’s height and weight.
- It should fit snugly when properly fastened.
- Grasp the top of the arm openings and gently pull up. Also have your child hold his arms straight over his head. If the jacket rides up over the child’s chin or face or if there is excess room above the armholes, the jacket is too big.
