We are all well aware that swimming pools provide us with hours of entertainment, quality family time and they can even make our barbecues better. Our pools also offer a great way to exercise without high impact and they are one of the coolest ways to cool us off during the dog days of summer.
But did you know that people have long been enjoying the virtues of swimming pools? They sure have! Hieroglyphics depict the ancient Egyptians swimming in cave pools. Additional evidence has been discovered indicating that around the same time period there were “baths” in other parts of the Middle East, largely used for rituals and, of course, relaxing in the “bath.”
The Ancient Romans also used pools for religious ceremonies, as well as healing; and other artifacts have been uncovered that point to the Ancient Greeks using pools for social and recreational purposes. When Augustus Caesar reigned, the Romans were credited with introducing heated swimming pools, using natural hot springs and man-made furnaces for the new luxury.
Fast forward to the 1800s where we began using pools for sports; and in the 1900s, diving became an Olympic event. The 1900s were also a time in which the materials used to build pools improved, leading to homeowners adding backyard pools of their very own.
