Swimming pool municipal codes, laws and regulations are put into place for one reason – to keep people safe; and safety conscious pool owners recognize the value of preventing pool area accidents.

So let’s get into some pool safety contingencies that have been put into place here in New Smyrna Beach. All swimming pools are required to have fencing around the entire pool area. These fences may not have any gaps large enough that a small child could squeeze through, are not acceptable if any portions can be removed without tools and must include self-latching gates. Your pool fencing must also be far enough away from the water’s edge so that a child or frail elderly person could not fall in if they happen to accidentally (or not accidentally) penetrate the fence. 

Another safety measure to consider if you own your own pool is an alarm that sounds when the pool gate opens. Keep in mind that you also want your gate latch far enough off the ground (at least four feet) to prevent a child from being able to reach it. Locking ground floor windows leading to the pool area is an excellent idea as well.
